Unwanted Premier League Record
There are plenty of Premier League stats that clubs love to brag about, Arsenal Inveincle season from 2004 is still talked about by their fans, City being the first team to 100 points, but there are a couple of unwanted records that some clubs seem to want to ignore, Liverpool being the only side to score 100 goals in a season and not win the Premier League, Derby County getting 11 points is another, however, there will soon be another unwelcome stat for a team.
A club is about to become the first to get 100 red cards in the Premier League and the clubs in question might surprise you.
Naill Quinn of Manchester City has the stat of the first player to get a red card in the Premier League but two clubs are close to getting 100 cards over the 29 seasons.
Manchester City isn’t one of them as they spent a good few years out of the top flight.
While we have looked at the players to get the fastest red cards, this record is a team award.
Which team will be the first to get to 100 Premier League Red cards.
There are two teams that are extremely close, Arsenal is on 99 Red cards and Everton on 98. Newcastle United are in 3rd on 88 and we think it’s highly unlikely it will be them. We think it will come from Arsenal or Everton, in fact, with Arsenal being on 99 it could come in their next game at home to Crystal Palace on Monday 18th October.
Before then Everton faces West Ham at home, but they would need to pick up two red cards in that game to beat Arsenal.
Both of these teams average 3.4 Red cards per season so it’s highly likely it will happen this year. Arsenal already has one red card this season, whilst Everton has zero.
Arsenal in their last 2 season have got 5 red cards, compared to Everton 2 (last season) 3 (19/20 Season) so Arsenal is far more likely to get the unwanted record of the first team to 100 red cards.
Looking at the graph below we can see that until the last two seasons Everton looked the most to reach the milestone but now we can only see Arsenal taking that crown.
Only once before in a Premier League game have Everton had two players sent off, in their game away at Leeds which ended 1-1 with Everton having two sent off and Leeds one player.
Everton vs West Ham Red Card History
These two have met 50 times in the Premier League and while they have been 6 red cards in those 50 fixtures only 1 of them was for Everton. So I think it’s highly unlikely that Everton will pick up 2 reds in this game.
Arsenal vs Crystal Palace Red Card History
There have only been 42 fixtures between these two sides and only 3 red cards, but 2 of them was for Arsenal. One of them was for the current Arsenal boss as well. Arteta will be hoping he can keep all 11 on the field as they build on their recent form.
Individual Red Cards
While this record is a team award, let’s look at some individual honours. In fact, Richard Dunne has the joint-most record with Duncan Ferguson and Patrick Vieria all each getting 8 red cards in total. Duncan Ferguson played fewer games though so was sent on average once every 29.5 games whereas Vieria was once every 34.88 games. Meaning both were sent on average one per season.
Overall
It’s now a matter of when and not if the first club to reach 100 red cards will be, but I think if Arsenal can keep all 11 on the pitch for the coming weeks then Everton will take the unwanted record, as the Merseyside Derby is coming up and that is the fixture with the most red cards.
